Alex O’Loughlin’s Biography:

Alex was born Alexander O’Lachlan on August 24, 1976, in Canberra, Australia, and grew-up in Sydney, Australia. He began his acting career as a teenager, appearing in short films and theater productions. After attending several acting classes he was accepted to the prestigious Australian theatre school, The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), at the age of 22. He graduated in 2002, after three years, with a Bachelor Degree in Dramatic Art.
After graduation, Alex had several guest starring roles in Australian television including White Collar Blue and Black Jack: Sweet Science. In 2005 he appeared in the Australian mini-series The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant, as William Bryant. His performance earned him two nominations as lead actor. One for an AFI (Australian Film Institute), Australia’s most prestigious award, and one for a Silver Logie.
Alex’s film career started in 2004 with the Australian romantic comedy, Oyster Farmer, in which he had the lead role of Jack Flange. Alex made his feature film debut in the states with sci-fi horror film Man-Thing, based on a Marvel comic book. While discussing a documentary about the underground world of feeders and gainers, Alex and a friend came up with their own idea for a screenplay. Directed by Brett Leonard, Feed was Alex's screenwriting and producing debut. He also starred in this controversial film as serial killer Michael Carter. The film was introduced in limited release in the U.S. in 2006.
In 2005, Alex packed up his belongings and moved from Australia to Los Angeles to follow his dream. In 2006 after auditioning for the lead role in The Holiday, starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet he was giving the small part of “half of kissing couple” and can be seen in the first 15 seconds of the film. In 2007 he landed the role of Marcus Bohem in the sci-fi thrill The Invisible. The role was originally much smaller, but the producers expanded it, because they were impressed with Alex’s acting ability. Switching back to the small screen in 2007 Alex had a recurring role as Detective Kevin Hiatt for 7 episodes during the 6th season of the critically acclaimed FX series, The Shield. Also in 2007 Alex auditioned for the lead role, of Louis Connelly in the movie August Rush. The role went to Jonathan Rhys Meyers, but Alex won the role of his brother, Marshall Connelly. While filming August Rush, Alex and Jonathan roomed together in NYC.
Alex’s big break came when he landed the role of Mick St. John, a PI vampire with a big heart, on CBS’ genre show, Moonlight. Moonlight ended in 2008 after 16 episodes, but it earned Alex a very avid fan following. CBS Television, being impressed with Alex offered him a one year holding deal after the cancellation of Moonlight. After a one year absence from television Alex had a guest starring role on CBS’ crime drama, Criminal Minds, as an obsessive compulsive serial killer, looking for someone to help him stop killing. As Vincent Rowlings, the serial killer, he grabbed the attention of fans and critics alike.
In the beginning of 2009 it was announced that Alex had been cast in the lead role of Dr. Andy Yablonski, on the new fall show, Three Rivers. Three Rivers was about a team of doctors who specialize in organ transplantation, set at Three Rivers Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was told from three different view points, those of the donor, recipient, and the transplant team. Alex’s character was based on the real life cardiac thoracic surgeon/transplant surgeon, Dr. "Gonzo" Gonzalez-Stawinski. After only 8 episodes, Three Rivers was cancelled.
In the fall of 2009 Alex appeared in Whiteout, as Russell Haden. The film starred Kate Beckinsale. Whiteout is about a U.S. Marshal (Beckinsale) who has to track a killer in Antarctica as the sun is about to set for six months. As part of his holding deal with CBS, Alex will be starring in The Back-Up Plan. The Back-Up Plan stars Jennifer Lopez as a single woman, Zoë, who is unlucky in love and feels her biological clock is ticking, so she decides to have artificial insemination. On the day of insemination she winds up meeting Stan (O’Loughlin), the man of her dreams. The Back-Up Plan is scheduled to be released in theaters in the spring of 2010.
In February of 2010, it was announced that Alex would take on the lead role of Steve McGarrett in the remake of the hit classic TV show, Hawaii Five-0.
